Sun City West is one of the most golf-rich 55+ communities in Arizona. Here’s every course, who owns them, how residents play, and the honest money part.
The short answer: Sun City West has nine golf courses. Seven are owned and run by the Recreation Centers of Sun City West — the nonprofit that every property owner belongs to — so in a real sense the residents own the golf. Those seven break down as four regulation-length par-72 courses (Grandview, Trail Ridge, Deer Valley, Pebblebrook) and three shorter executive courses (Stardust, Echo Mesa, Desert Trails — par 60–61). Two more sit inside the community independently: Briarwood (private) and Hillcrest (public). Golf is paid as you play — it is not bundled into your rec-center assessment.
If golf is central to your search, Sun City West belongs at the top of the list. It’s a Del Webb-built active adult community in the northwest Valley, and it was designed from the start around golf. Who owns the golf courses in Sun City West?
This is the part that sets Sun City West apart from most newer 55+ communities. The seven main courses are owned and operated by the Recreation Centers of Sun City West, Inc., a nonprofit whose members are the property owners themselves. When you buy a home here, you become a member of the Rec Centers — the same organization that owns the courses, the clubs, and the recreation facilities. There’s no outside company that can raise the club dues, close a course, or sell the land out from under the community, because the community is the owner.
That’s a real contrast with a lot of the golf communities being built today, where the course is owned by a private operator and residents pay a separate club membership to play — and where the course’s future is ultimately the operator’s call, not the community’s. It’s one of the honest questions we always help buyers ask: who actually owns the golf? In Sun City West, the answer is: you and your neighbors do.
The seven Recreation Centers courses
The Rec Centers run four regulation-length par-72 courses and three shorter executive courses (par 60–61) — enough variety that you can tee it up on a full championship layout one day and play a quick, walkable executive round the next. Yardages below are from each course’s back (championship) tee; all of them play much shorter from the forward tees.
Four regulation-length courses (par 72)
Grandview · 6,775 yds
The community’s marquee course and the longest of the seven — it hosted the LPGA Legends Tour in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Plays to 71.6 / 126 from the back tees.
Trail Ridge · 6,581 yds
The tightest test of the group — its 128 slope is the highest of the seven. A full-length layout that rewards accuracy off the tee (71.2 / 128).
Deer Valley · 6,410 yds
A friendly full-size course and a favorite for everyday rounds, playing to 70.0 / 120 from the Blue tees with much shorter forward options.
Pebblebrook · 6,410 yds
The fourth regulation course, matching Deer Valley’s 70.0 / 120 back-tee numbers — approachable length with a tee for every game.
Three executive courses (par 60–61)
Stardust · 4,267 yds · par 60
The longest of the three executive tracks — quick to play and easy on the legs, ideal for a relaxed round or a tune-up.
Echo Mesa · 4,145 yds · par 60
A par-60 executive course — walkable, fast, and a great option when you want golf without a five-hour commitment.
Desert Trails · 4,027 yds · par 61
The shortest of the seven at par 61 — a lower-commitment layout that’s still a real, satisfying round.

Two more courses sit inside Sun City West but are run separately from the Rec Centers, which is why you’ll sometimes hear “nine courses” and sometimes “seven.” Both are worth knowing:
Briarwood Country Club · 6,576 yds
A private club (Troon-managed) with its own clubhouse dining, pool, and tennis, and social or equity memberships. Its par-72 course plays to 71.7 / 130 — the highest slope in Sun City West. The private-club option for buyers who want that experience within the community.
Hillcrest Golf Club · 7,002 yds
Actually the longest course in Sun City West — a par-72 public championship layout (72.7 / 126) designed by Greg Nash & Jeff Hardin in 1978. It has hosted Senior PGA and LPGA tour events; open play, no membership required.
How residents play — and what it costs
Here’s the honest money part, and it works a lot like Del Webb’s other Sun Cities: golf is pay-as-you-play, not bundled into a single “it’s all included” fee. As a Sun City West property owner you pay the annual Recreation Centers assessment, which covers the rec centers, fitness, pools, courts, and the community’s clubs — but green fees for golf are separate, paid each time you play. Rec Centers cardholders play at reduced rates versus the public, and there are annual golf-pass options for people who play often. Per-round rates vary by season, as they do everywhere in Arizona.

Because golf is pay-as-you-play, you’re not subsidizing courses you never use through a mandatory golf fee — good news if you don’t golf. And if you do, resident cardholder rates plus annual-pass options make regular play affordable across seven courses. Living on a Sun City West golf course
With seven courses woven through the community, a lot of homes back right up to a fairway, and those golf-course lots are among the most sought-after in Sun City West — open green views, space behind you, and West Valley sunsets. A few honest things to know before you buy on a course anywhere: fairway lots typically carry golf easements (the course isn’t liable for the occasional errant ball or overspray), and they usually sell at a premium over interior lots for the view. None of that is a dealbreaker — it’s just the kind of detail we make sure you understand on the specific home you like.
