Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club: A Guard-Gated Golf Community in Gold Canyon
This private country club community sits at the foot of the Superstition Mountains in Gold Canyon. The two Superstition Mountain golf courses are Jack Nicklaus designs, and there’s also a 50,000-square-foot clubhouse, 17 custom-home neighborhoods, and a staffed gate. It’s one of the East Valley’s premier golf communities, and it’s popular with people planning a retirement move. Here’s what to know before you buy.
Curious about Superstition Mountain? Reach out any time — we’re glad to help.
Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club is one of the East Valley’s premier private golf communities — a guard-gated enclave in Gold Canyon set dramatically at the base of the Superstition Mountains. Altogether, it blends serious golf (two Jack Nicklaus courses), a grand Tuscan-inspired clubhouse, and 17 distinctive custom-home neighborhoods surrounded by Sonoran Desert scenery. In short, this is a true country-club lifestyle behind a staffed gate, for buyers who want the setting, the golf, and the amenities at the highest level.
One thing to know up front: Superstition Mountain is an all-ages community — it is not age-restricted (not a 55+ community). Instead, it draws golf enthusiasts, professionals, retirees, and active adults alike. So if you’re planning a retirement move and specifically want a 55+ community in the same area, ask us about MountainBrook Village in Gold Canyon — we’ll happily show you both.
From founder Jarl Kubat
Founder Jarl Kubat has spent 22+ years helping buyers and sellers in Arizona 55+ and retirement communities, in the West Valley and the East Valley. He lives in Arizona Traditions in Surprise, on the other side of the Valley. Still, a lot of the retirement buyers we work with put Superstition Mountain on their list, because they want golf and mountain views without an age rule. First, we explain how the club works. A home here does not come with golf, so we price the membership in before you fall for a house.

Superstition Mountain golf courses: two Jack Nicklaus designs
Golf is the heart of the community, and it’s serious golf: two award-winning Jack Nicklaus courses. In fact, Jack designed them with two of his sons — Gary Nicklaus worked on the Prospector course, and Jack Nicklaus Jr. helped design Lost Gold. Both Superstition Mountain golf courses feature wall-to-wall turf (roughly 180 acres of grass across the two courses) and generous, playable landing areas framed by the desert and the mountains.
| Course | Design | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Prospector | Jack Nicklaus, with son Gary Nicklaus | Wall-to-wall turf, wide landing areas, desert and mountain views |
| Lost Gold | Jack Nicklaus, with son Jack Nicklaus Jr. | Wall-to-wall turf, playable fairways framed by the Superstitions |
So if you searched for the “Superstition golf course,” you were most likely looking for one of these two. However, this is a private club. Play on the Superstition Mountain golf courses comes through a separate, purchased club membership, and HOA dues don’t pay for golf. For tee times, guest play, and course details, check with the Superstition Mountain Golf & Country Club directly. To compare golf communities across the Valley, see our Arizona 55+ golf course homes guide.
The clubhouse & amenities
On top of the golf, the community is anchored by a 50,000-square-foot, Tuscan-inspired clubhouse with a genuinely resort-level lifestyle:
- Exceptional dining and a vibrant social calendar.
- A Sports Club with a fitness center, group exercise, tennis, and pickleball.
- Also, a resort-style pool.
- In addition, robust wellness programs.
- Finally, hiking and biking trails that wind into the neighboring Tonto National Forest.
All in all, between the golf, the dining, the fitness and racquet sports, and the desert right outside the gate, it’s a community built for an active, engaged lifestyle. However, pickleball players should ask us how court access works for a specific home, because the courts sit inside the Sports Club. We’ll confirm the current court count and access rules for you.
Superstition Mountain country club membership: how it works
Here’s an important detail we always explain, because it surprises some buyers: at the Superstition Mountain country club, owning a home does not automatically include golf or club access. Use of the golf courses and the club amenities is through a separate, purchased membership with its own dues. Even so, the club offers different levels — social on up to full golf — so you can match it to how you’ll actually use the club. We’ll walk you through the current options, costs, and any requirements so there are no surprises.
The homes & neighborhoods
Superstition Mountain is made up of 17 distinctive neighborhoods offering custom homes, golf-course estates, and lower-maintenance options — all surrounded by Sonoran Desert and mountain views. Because homes here are individual and often custom, the range of size, style, and price is wide, and no two are quite alike. In fact, the neighborhood, the lot, and the view all shape the value — and that’s exactly where we help. For that reason, we’ll pull the full details, including any golf-course-lot or view premium, on anything you’re considering.
Buying at this level, representation matters. After all, on a custom home or golf estate, the lot, the view, the upgrades, and the resale story are where a good agent earns their keep. We’ll make sure you understand exactly what you’re paying for before you write an offer.
Guard-gated & the location
First of all, Superstition Mountain has a private, staffed guard gate — a real, manned entrance for a genuine layer of security and privacy. Better yet, it sits in Gold Canyon at the far eastern edge of the Valley, right at the base of the Superstition Mountains, with easy access to US 60. You’re minutes from world-class hiking and the outdoor recreation of the Superstitions and Tonto National Forest. Meanwhile, shopping, dining, and healthcare in the Apache Junction and East Mesa area are a short drive. In other words, it feels like a getaway, because it is one.
HOA fees & what to budget for (2026)
Superstition Mountain is a luxury country club community, and the HOA reflects that. Here are the 2026 figures for a single-family home, at last check.
| Fee | 2026 amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| HOA (quarterly) | About $1,758 | ~$586/mo — guard gate, roads & common areas |
| Transfer fee | About $400 | One-time, at purchase |
| Capital improvement fee | About $1,020 | One-time, at purchase |
| HOA set-up fee | About $100 | One-time, at purchase |
| Resale disclosure fee | About $400 | One-time — seller’s fee |
A couple of things to know: on single-family homes you handle all of your own exterior maintenance — it isn’t bundled into the HOA. Also, townhomes and patio homes carry different HOA fees, so call us for the current figure on a specific attached home.
The club is a separate cost: golf and the club amenities are accessed through a separate, purchased membership with its own dues, on top of the HOA — so if you want to use the club, budget for that too. We’ll confirm the current membership levels and any requirements for you. Remember, HOA dues don’t pay for the Superstition Mountain golf courses. Also, fees change, so we get them from the HOA in writing on every home. To see how these dues compare with Arizona 55+ and retirement communities, visit our Arizona 55+ HOA fees page.
Superstition Mountain home prices: the market right now
First, because nearly every home here is individual and often custom, prices swing widely from one street to the next. For example, a golf-course estate with a big mountain view and a smaller lower-maintenance home can sell for very different numbers. As a result, a single “average price” doesn’t tell you much.

Is Superstition Mountain right for you?
A great fit if you…
- Want serious, championship golf — two Nicklaus courses — behind a staffed gate.
- Also, love a dramatic mountain-and-desert setting with trails right outside the gate.
- Likewise, prefer an all-ages private country club over an age-restricted community.
- Above all, are buying at the custom-home or golf-estate level and want it done right.
Worth knowing before you buy…
- It’s not 55+ — it’s all ages. (Want 55+ in Gold Canyon? Ask about MountainBrook Village.)
- Besides that, golf and club amenities are accessed through a separate, purchased membership — owning a home alone doesn’t include them.
- Also, homes are individual and often custom, so condition, upgrades, and price vary widely.
- Finally, it’s a far-East-Valley location — a getaway setting, but a longer drive to central Phoenix.

Golf and the club

Do I have to join the club to live there?
Owning a home doesn’t automatically include golf or club access — that comes through a separate, purchased membership with its own dues, at different levels from social up to full golf. We’ll explain the current levels, costs, and any requirements.

For 2026, the single-family HOA is about $1,758 a quarter (about $586 a month), plus one-time fees at purchase of about $400 (transfer), $1,020 (capital improvement), and a $100 set-up fee. Separately, club and golf access comes through a purchased membership with its own dues, at various levels. Townhomes and patio homes have different HOA fees.
