A typical day, from coffee to sunset
Mornings start early here — that’s the desert, and it’s the crowd. Many residents are out by 7 a.m. for a tee time, a pickleball game, or a lap-swim before the heat. By mid-morning the fitness centers and craft studios fill up. Lunch might be at a pub inside the community or at home. Afternoons lean quieter — a club meeting, a swim, a woodworking project — and evenings bring cards, a show at the theater, or dinner out. Golf carts hum along the streets. It is a full life, at a pace you set.
The reason it works is simple: almost everything sits a short golf-cart ride away, and one fee opens the door to most of it.
The four recreation centers
Sun City West runs four full recreation centers, and each has its own personality. Your recreation membership gets you into all of them.
R.H. Johnson
The flagship. Its Sports Pavilion holds 30 bowling lanes and nearly 30 billiard tables, plus an outdoor pool, fitness center, tennis and pickleball, bocce, lawn bowling, mini golf, two dog parks, and the community library. Bites at Lizard Acres Pub or Pete’s Café.
Fred Kuentz
The arts-and-stage center. The 325-seat Stardust Theatre hosts live shows, and the woodworking shop and craft studios stay busy. Add an outdoor pool and spa, a fitness center, tennis, a softball field, and a walking track.
Palm Ridge
The wellness and events hub. Indoor and outdoor pools and spas, an indoor walking track, and one of the Valley’s best pickleball setups. The Summit Hall ballrooms seat around 900 for dances and big events.
Beardsley
The creative, laid-back corner. Arts and crafts, a photography lab, a clay club, and a beloved garden railroad. Indoor pool and spa, fitness center, mini golf, horseshoes, shuffleboard, shaded ramadas, and a quiet meditation garden.
Pickleball, tennis, and the sports crowd
Pickleball is the hottest draw in 55+ living right now, and Sun City West is a real hotspot. The SCW Pickleball Club plays on 26 dedicated courts — 8 at the Sands Courts by R.H. Johnson and 18 at the Liberty Courts at Palm Ridge — and they’re lit for night play. Leagues and open play welcome every level, so a brand-new player and a lifelong athlete both find a game.
Tennis is just as strong, with 22 courts across the rec centers plus four platform-tennis courts for cooler mornings. Add bocce, lawn bowling, softball, shuffleboard, and swimming, and the sports calendar never really slows down.

Golf without leaving home
Golf is a headline part of daily life here. The community owns and runs all seven courses, so residents play at cardholder rates and book through the community’s tee-time lottery. There are four regulation courses and three shorter executive courses, so you can play a full 18 or sneak in a quick nine. Grandview, the longest at about 6,775 yards, has hosted the LPGA Legends Tour and holds the Golf Lab teaching center and the Crooked Putter restaurant. Where daily life really happens: the clubs
Ask longtime residents what they love, and most skip the pools and name a club. Sun City West charters more than 90 of them. There’s ceramics, silvercraft, stained glass, and photography. There’s a metal club and a full auto-restoration shop. There’s line dancing, karaoke, model railroads, investment groups, a rock club, and cards of every kind. Dining and everyday errands
You don’t have to cook to eat well here. Pete’s Café and Lizard Acres Pub sit at R.H. Johnson, and the Crooked Putter serves up at Grandview. For everything else — groceries, pharmacies, restaurants, banks — shopping is minutes away just outside the gates, so a daily errand rarely takes long.
Staying well and getting around
Health care is close, which matters more as the years add up. Banner Del E. Webb Medical Center sits right inside the community, and three on-site fire stations back it up.
