If you’re shopping Sun Lakes from out of state, Ironwood and Oakwood are the two names that keep coming up together — and for good reason. They run as a single country club called IronOaks, so on paper they look almost identical. Buyers get stuck trying to tell them apart. Here’s the honest breakdown, so you can pick the right one before you ever get on a plane.
First, what IronOaks actually is
Sun Lakes isn’t one community — it’s five separate country club communities south of Chandler. Two of them, Ironwood and Oakwood, are joined together as IronOaks Country Club. Live in either one and you share everything across both: more than one golf course, a big shared clubhouse, pools, and courts — the most to do of any pairing in Sun Lakes. Both are guard gated with a guard on duty 24/7, and both run about the same monthly HOA.
So when you choose between them, you’re not choosing amenities — those come with either address. You’re choosing the home.

Oakwood has an optional yearly fitness-center fee — you pay it only if you use the gym, it’s not baked into everyone’s HOA. Golf at IronOaks has its own membership and play options, separate from your HOA, and those change over time. What is IronOaks Country Club?
IronOaks is the shared country club of two Sun Lakes communities, Ironwood and Oakwood. They run together as one club, so living in either gives you the amenities of both — more than one golf course, a big shared clubhouse, pools, and courts. It’s the most amenity-rich pairing of the five Sun Lakes communities.
Are Ironwood and Oakwood both guard gated?
Yes — both have a guard on duty 24/7. They’re two of only three guard-gated communities in Sun Lakes (Palo Verde is the third). Residents use a windshield transponder and visitors are stopped at the gate.
Which one has the newer homes?
Oakwood. It opened in 1994 as the last of the five Sun Lakes communities, so its homes are the newest and tend to feel more modern. Ironwood opened in 1987 and its homes run larger and higher-end, but older.
Can I get a townhome in IronOaks?
